In Pixar's Cars, which character is voiced by racing legend Richard Petty?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar's Cars, The King is voiced by racing legend Richard Petty.

The King is a veteran Piston Cup racer whose design is based on a Plymouth Superbird. His racing number is 43, the number associated with Richard Petty during much of his NASCAR career. Petty also supplies the character's English voice, creating a direct connection between the fictional champion and one of American stock-car racing's most famous drivers.

The King serves as a respected contrast to Lightning McQueen's early arrogance and Chick Hicks's aggressive behavior. He is experienced, professional, and nearing the end of his racing career. In the first film's final race, a crash leaves The King unable to finish, and Lightning chooses to help him rather than claim an unchallenged victory.

The character's real-world inspiration is especially clear in his colors, number, and body style. His wife, Mrs. The King, is voiced by Petty's real-life wife, Lynda Petty, in the English version.
