In Pixar’s Cars, Doc Hudson is the town’s former racing champion and local doctor.
Doc is revealed to have been the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, a celebrated racer who won three Piston Cups before a serious crash ended his racing career. He later becomes Radiator Springs’ doctor and judge. Paul Newman voices Doc in the English version, and the role was one of Newman’s final major film performances.
The character is based on the real Hudson Hornet, a vehicle associated with NASCAR success in the early 1950s. The film uses that history as inspiration but creates a fictional biography for Doc, including his relationship with Radiator Springs and Lightning McQueen.
Doc initially resists McQueen’s presence, but eventually becomes his mentor. His story explains why the town’s quiet residents understand racing, loss, and the importance of being remembered beyond trophies.
