In Pixar’s Cars, Strip Weathers is the reigning Piston Cup champion before Lightning McQueen arrives.
Strip Weathers, known by the nickname The King, is an established veteran racer sponsored by Dinoco. He is respected for his skill, professionalism, and long career. At the beginning of the film, the Piston Cup season ends in a three-way tie among The King, Chick Hicks, and Lightning McQueen, forcing a final race to determine the champion.
The King’s role gives Lightning a model of sportsmanship as well as a direct competitive target. Chick is more concerned with winning and publicity, while The King understands the importance of finishing a career with dignity. The final race’s crash also makes the contrast between the two older racers especially important.
Strip Weathers is voiced by Richard Petty, a real NASCAR champion. His name and design are an affectionate reference to Petty’s racing identity. The character’s nickname, The King, should not be confused with the Piston Cup trophy itself.
