Mater is the rusty, brown tow truck who lives in Radiator Springs and quickly becomes Lightning McQueen’s closest friend. His full name is commonly given as Tow Mater, a pun on “tomater,” reflecting the film’s playful use of automotive language.

Larry the Cable Guy voices Mater, giving him a distinctive Southern-flavored comic personality. Although Mater often appears goofy and forgetful, he is loyal, brave, and skilled at helping others when the story requires it.
