“Our Town” plays over the end credits of Pixar’s Cars and was nominated for an Academy Award.
Randy Newman wrote and performed “Our Town” for the film. Its reflective lyrics suit the movie’s themes of changing communities, forgotten roads, and the emotional importance of Radiator Springs. The song was nominated for Best Original Song at the 79th Academy Awards.
“Our Town” did not win that Oscar; the award went to “I Need to Wake Up” from An Inconvenient Truth, written and performed by Melissa Etheridge. The nomination remains one of Cars’ major awards recognitions.
The soundtrack also includes “Life Is a Highway,” performed by Rascal Flatts, and “Real Gone,” performed by Sheryl Crow. Those songs are strongly associated with the film, but they are different from Newman’s Oscar-nominated closing song.
