In Pixar's Cars, the veteran racer who becomes Radiator Springs' doctor is Doc Hudson.
Doc is initially introduced as the town's medical professional and judge, but Lightning McQueen later discovers that he was once the famous Hudson Hornet. Doc won three Piston Cup championships before a crash ended his racing career and caused the racing world to move on without him.
His story explains why Doc is suspicious of celebrity racers and reluctant to discuss his past. Lightning's arrival gradually reawakens Doc's interest in racing, and Doc eventually becomes the rookie's crew chief. The character is based partly on the real Hudson Hornet, a car celebrated for its “step-down” design and success in early stock-car racing. Paul Newman provided Doc's voice.
