In Pixar’s Cars, what is the name of the retired racer who becomes Lightning McQueen’s mentor?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar’s Cars, the retired racer who mentors Lightning McQueen is Doc Hudson.

Doc Hudson is the local judge and physician of Radiator Springs, but he was once the Fabulous Hudson Hornet, a celebrated Piston Cup racer. After Lightning damages the town’s road, Doc oversees his punishment and initially keeps his racing history secret. He later agrees to train Lightning, teaching him techniques based on experience rather than speed alone.

Doc’s backstory connects the fictional film world to the real Hudson Hornet, a car famous for its success in early NASCAR competition. The character is modeled as a 1951 Hudson Hornet. His past also explains why he resents the racing world: after a serious crash, he was replaced and largely forgotten by the sport he had once dominated.

Paul Newman provided Doc Hudson’s English voice in Cars. The character’s legacy remains important in Cars 3, where Lightning remembers Doc while facing a younger generation of racers.
