In Pixar’s Cars, Radiator Springs’ eccentric tow truck is named Mater.
Mater is a rusty brown 1951 International Harvester boom truck who lives in Radiator Springs. His name is a shortened, accent-based form of “tow mater,” a pun on “tow matter.” He becomes Lightning McQueen’s closest friend after McQueen is forced to remain in town.
Mater is known for his tall tales, enthusiasm, and distinctive Southern-style speech. Although he is comic relief, he is also loyal and perceptive, helping McQueen understand the value of friendship and community. His friendship with McQueen continues in Cars 2 and Cars 3.
Mater should not be confused with Sheriff, the town’s law-enforcement vehicle, or with Guido, Luigi’s small Italian forklift. Mater also received a larger starring role in the Disney television series Cars on the Road.
