At which Academy Awards ceremony was Pixar’s Cars nominated for Best Animated Feature?

Pixar’s Cars was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 79th Academy Awards.

The 79th Academy Awards honored films released in 2006 and took place on February 25, 2007. Cars competed in the Best Animated Feature category against Happy Feet and Monster House. Happy Feet won the award, so Cars received a nomination rather than the Oscar.

Cars did win another major award during the same ceremony: its song “Our Town,” written and performed by Randy Newman, won Best Original Song. That result is a frequent source of confusion because the film’s music was honored even though the feature did not win animated feature.

The nomination recognized Cars as one of the leading animated releases of 2006. Pixar’s later Cars films were not nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards. Cars 2 was released in 2011, and Cars 3 followed in 2017.
