Cruz Ramirez trains Lightning McQueen in Pixar’s Cars 3.
Cruz is a high-performance trainer at the Rust-eze Racing Center. She uses modern simulation technology and data-driven exercises to help McQueen respond to the younger, faster generation of racers led by Jackson Storm. Their relationship begins with McQueen resisting her methods.
Cruz is more than a coach. She has wanted to race herself, but her confidence has been limited by assumptions about what kind of car belongs on a professional track. McQueen eventually recognizes her ability and helps give her an opportunity to compete.
Cristela Alonzo voices Cruz in the English version. The character’s arc makes Cars 3 a story about mentorship and changing roles, not only McQueen’s attempt to remain competitive. Cruz later becomes a racer in her own right, while McQueen moves toward a mentor role.
