In Pixar’s Cars 3, who directs the film?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar’s Cars 3, Brian Fee directs the film.

Cars 3 was released in 2017 and marked Fee’s feature directorial debut. Before directing, he worked at Pixar as a storyboard artist and contributed to films including Cars, Cars 2, Ratatouille, and WALL-E. His familiarity with the franchise helped shape the sequel’s focus on Lightning McQueen’s changing career.

The story follows McQueen as a new generation of technologically advanced racers, led by Jackson Storm, begins to dominate the Piston Cup. McQueen turns to trainer Cruz Ramirez and confronts the question of how an established champion can remain relevant.

Brian Fee is different from John Lasseter, who directed the first Cars and co-directed or directed other Pixar projects. Brad Lewis directed Cars 2 with Lasseter. Cars 3 returns the series to a more personal sports-drama structure rather than the international spy format used by Cars 2.
