Brian Fee directed Pixar’s Cars 3.
Cars 3 marked Brian Fee’s feature-directing debut. Before directing, Fee worked at Pixar as a storyboard artist and contributed to earlier films, including Cars and Cars 2. His experience with the franchise helped him guide a story centered on Lightning McQueen’s changing place in professional racing.
John Lasseter directed the first Cars, while Cars 2 was directed by John Lasseter and Brad Lewis. Cars 3 therefore represents a change in the creative leadership of the trilogy. The film was produced by Kevin Reher and released by Walt Disney Pictures in 2017.
The story follows McQueen after a new generation of racers, led by Jackson Storm, begins to dominate the Piston Cup. It also expands Cruz Ramirez’s role from trainer to important racer. Fee continued working at Pixar after Cars 3, including involvement with story and animation projects, but his Cars feature remains his directing debut.
