Cruz Ramirez becomes Lightning McQueen's trainer in Pixar's Cars 3.
Cruz is introduced as a high-performance trainer at the Rust-eze Racing Center. She initially approaches Lightning with data-driven methods, simulators, and modern fitness exercises, but their relationship changes when Lightning asks to train away from the center. Their journey eventually reveals that Cruz is not only a skilled coach but also a talented racer who has been discouraged from pursuing competition.
Lightning later recognizes Cruz's potential and helps her take his place in the final race against Jackson Storm. The transition reflects Cars 3's central theme: experience can be passed to a new generation rather than simply defended against it. Cruz's yellow design contrasts with Lightning's red body and Storm's dark racer styling.
Cruz is voiced by Cristela Alonzo. She should not be confused with Sally Carrera, Lightning's romantic partner, or Natalie Certain, the racing analyst who evaluates competitors. Cars 3 was released in 2017 and was directed by Brian Fee.
