Smokey is introduced as the former crew chief and mechanic associated with Doc Hudson. After McQueen suffers a serious setback against the technologically advanced Jackson Storm, Cruz Ramirez takes him to Thomasville, Georgia. There, Smokey helps McQueen understand Doc's history and rebuild his confidence.
Smokey's training emphasizes observation, adaptability, and learning from a driver's surroundings rather than relying only on speed.
