Smokey helps Lightning McQueen reconnect with Doc Hudson’s racing past in Pixar’s Cars 3.
Lightning visits Thomasville, where he meets Smokey, Doc Hudson’s former crew chief. Smokey explains that Doc’s career did not end because he lacked talent; it ended after a crash and the loss of the racing world’s support. This history helps Lightning understand the emotional cost of being pushed aside.
Smokey then trains Lightning using techniques rooted in Doc’s experience rather than relying only on new technology. The relationship links the third film to Doc’s unseen racing years and gives Lightning a more personal reason to change his approach.
Smokey is voiced by Chris Cooper. He is distinct from Sheriff, the law-enforcement car in Radiator Springs, and Mack, Lightning’s transport truck.
