Cruz Ramirez replaces Lightning McQueen as the Piston Cup champion in Pixar’s Cars 3.
Cruz begins the film as Lightning’s high-performance trainer at the Rust-eze Racing Center. She is knowledgeable about modern racing technology but lacks confidence in her own ability as a competitor. After Lightning’s training program changes, Cruz becomes increasingly involved in his comeback effort.
During the Florida 500, Lightning realizes that Cruz has the talent and determination to race against Jackson Storm. He gives her his racing number and allows her to enter the competition. Cruz then defeats Storm and wins the Piston Cup, while Lightning begins a new role connected to Doc Hudson’s legacy.
The ending does not erase Lightning’s importance. Instead, it presents Cruz’s victory as a continuation of his mentoring relationship with Doc, showing how racing knowledge can be passed to a new generation.
