In Pixar’s Cars 3, which new racer challenges Lightning McQueen’s position?

The story behind the answer

Jackson Storm challenges Lightning McQueen in Pixar’s Cars 3.

Storm represents a new generation of highly engineered racers. He is faster, data-driven, and backed by modern training methods, while Lightning is an older champion whose career has lasted through several changes in racing technology. Storm’s rapid success convinces Lightning that traditional experience alone may no longer be enough.

The conflict drives the film’s training storyline. Lightning works with Cruz Ramirez, a trainer who later becomes an important racer herself. Their partnership helps him understand that adapting and supporting another competitor can matter more than simply preserving his own position.

Jackson Storm is voiced by Armie Hammer. He should not be confused with Chick Hicks, Lightning’s rival in the original Cars, or Cal Weathers, a veteran racer connected to the Dinoco racing team. Storm is specifically the modern-generation opponent introduced in Cars 3.
