In Pixar’s Cars 3, Cruz Ramirez trains Lightning McQueen before becoming a racer herself.
Cruz begins as a trainer at the Rust-eze Racing Center, where she uses modern equipment and unconventional exercises to prepare athletes. She is assigned to help Lightning recover after a crash and develop the speed needed to challenge the younger Jackson Storm. Their relationship changes as Cruz’s own racing ability and ambitions emerge.
Lightning eventually recognizes that Cruz has the talent and determination to compete. She takes his place in the climactic Florida 500, where she races against Storm. The story therefore shifts from a simple comeback for Lightning to a mentorship narrative about passing confidence and opportunity to another competitor.
Cruz is voiced by Cristela Alonzo. Her yellow design and number 51 connect her visually to Doc Hudson, whose legacy also shapes Lightning’s return to competition.
