In Pixar’s Cars 3, Lightning McQueen continues racing under number 95.
The number 95 is Lightning’s signature racing number throughout the Cars franchise. It is displayed on his body, his racing equipment, and much of the franchise’s merchandise. The number is a tribute to 1995, the year Pixar released Toy Story, its first feature film.
Cars 3 contrasts Lightning’s familiar number 95 with the newer generation of racers, especially Jackson Storm. After Cruz Ramirez takes over Lightning’s race car for the Florida 500, she races using the number 95 and wins the event.
Lightning’s number should not be confused with Doc Hudson’s number 51, which Lightning later adopts as part of his mentor role. The number 95 therefore remains associated with Lightning even as his career changes from leading racer to teacher and team leader.
