“Our Town” plays during the montage of Lightning McQueen and Sally traveling through Radiator Springs in Pixar’s Cars (2006).
The song was written and performed by James Taylor for the film’s soundtrack. Its gentle, reflective mood contrasts with Lightning’s earlier obsession with speed and helps show his growing connection to the town and to Sally Carrera.
The sequence presents local landmarks and the changing relationship between the two characters. It also supports the film’s larger idea that places can lose their importance when people stop taking time to visit them. The music therefore functions as story development rather than simply background.
Cars features a broad soundtrack mixing original songs with established recordings. Other prominent tracks include Rascal Flatts’ “Life Is a Highway,” Sheryl Crow’s “Real Gone,” and Chuck Berry’s “Route 66.” “Our Town” is specifically associated with the film’s quieter Radiator Springs material.
