In Pixar's Cars 2, Mater is mistaken for an American spy.
Mater is Lightning McQueen's tow-truck friend from Radiator Springs. During the World Grand Prix in Tokyo, British agent Finn McMissile and spy-in-training Holley Shiftwell interpret Mater's accidental observations as evidence that he is a highly capable American agent. Mater is then drawn into an international espionage adventure despite having no spy training.
His misunderstanding drives the film's comic plot. Mater encounters secret devices, undercover cars, and a conspiracy linked to the World Grand Prix and Allinol fuel. Although other characters initially treat him as foolish or embarrassing, his openness and unconventional thinking eventually help solve the crisis.
Mater is voiced by Larry the Cable Guy. He is different from Finn McMissile, the professional British spy, and Holley Shiftwell, the agent assigned to work with him. Cars 2 gives Mater a much larger role than he has in the first film.
