Mater becomes an accidental international spy in Pixar’s Cars 2.
Mater travels with Lightning McQueen to the World Grand Prix, a global racing event. After being mistaken for an American agent, he is drawn into an espionage plot involving secret technology, spies, and a conspiracy targeting the race.
The misunderstanding drives the film’s comedy: Mater is not trained as a spy, but his openness and unconventional behavior sometimes help him notice clues that professional agents miss. His story runs alongside McQueen’s racing rivalry and the investigation led by Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell.
Cars 2 was released in 2011 and was directed by John Lasseter and Brad Lewis. It shifts the series toward an international action-adventure structure, with locations including Tokyo, Porto Corsa, and London. Lightning McQueen remains central, but Mater is the character whose mistaken identity creates the main spy premise.
