Mater becomes a secret agent in Pixar's Cars 2 after being mistaken for one.
While attending the World Grand Prix with Lightning McQueen, Mater is confused with an American spy during a meeting in Tokyo. Real agents Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell then involve him in their investigation, believing his eccentric behavior may be deliberate cover.
Mater's accidental espionage role drives the film's comedy and action. He helps uncover a plot involving a group of “lemons,” an electromagnetic pulse weapon, and the planned exposure of Allinol fuel as dangerous. His friendship with McQueen remains the emotional center of the story.
Mater is a tow truck from Radiator Springs and McQueen's closest friend. The character is voiced by Larry the Cable Guy. Cars 2 is the only main Cars feature built primarily around Mater's mistaken-identity spy adventure.
