In Pixar's Cars 2, what type of vehicle is Grem?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar's Cars 2, Grem is a Gremlin.

Grem is a character based on the AMC Gremlin, an American subcompact car introduced by American Motors Corporation in 1970. In the film, he is a member of the criminal group working with Professor Zündapp and plays a villainous role in the World Grand Prix conspiracy.

Cars 2 gives several older or less prestigious vehicle designs roles within its spy and criminal cast. Grem’s battered appearance and name are visual and verbal references to the real Gremlin model. His partner Acer is based on another compact car design, creating a deliberately mismatched pair of antagonists.

Grem is sometimes mistaken for a Pacer because both models were unusual American compact cars from the same broad era. The Pacer is associated with Acer, while Grem specifically represents the Gremlin. Neither character is one of the film’s international race competitors.
