In Pixar's Cars 2, the World Grand Prix brings the protagonists around the world.
The competition is organized by Sir Miles Axlerod to promote Allinol, a new alternative fuel. It takes Lightning McQueen to races in Tokyo, Porto Corsa, and London, while Mater becomes involved in an international spy operation surrounding the event.
The World Grand Prix gives Cars 2 a broader setting than the original film. Instead of focusing mainly on the American Piston Cup circuit and Radiator Springs, the sequel uses recognizable international locations and combines racing with a spy-adventure plot.
Cars 2 was released in 2011 and was directed by John Lasseter and Brad Lewis. The film's racing storyline also introduces Francesco Bernoulli, an Italian Formula-style champion who competes against Lightning. The World Grand Prix is fictional, despite using the name of a competition that sounds similar to real-world motorsport events.
