In Pixar's Cars 2, what global racing event brings competitors together across several countries?

The story behind the answer

In Pixar's Cars 2, the global racing event bringing competitors together across several countries is the World Grand Prix.

The event is organized by Miles Axlerod and is designed to promote an alternative fuel called Allinol. Its races take place in Japan, Italy, and England, giving Cars 2 an international setting unlike the largely American road-and-racing focus of the first film.

Lightning McQueen enters the World Grand Prix, while Mater becomes involved in Finn McMissile's spy investigation. The racing event therefore provides both the public competition and the setting for the film's espionage plot. The World Grand Prix should not be confused with the Piston Cup, the recurring stock-car championship associated with Lightning's career in the first and third films.
