The three-race international event in Pixar's Cars 2 (2011) is the World Grand Prix.
Sir Miles Axlerod creates the World Grand Prix to promote Allinol, a new alternative fuel. The competition brings Lightning McQueen and other racers to Tokyo, Porto Corsa, and London. Its international format is the main sporting framework of the sequel.
The event is fictional, but its structure draws on real-world grand touring and international motorsport competitions. The film uses the races to move its characters between major locations while the spy storyline develops in parallel.
The World Grand Prix should not be confused with the Piston Cup. The Piston Cup is the major American stock-car championship featured in Cars and remains associated with Lightning's career. Cars 2 also introduces international competitors such as Francesco Bernoulli, an Italian open-wheel racer who challenges Lightning during the event.
