In Philip José Farmer’s fantasy novel To Your Scattered Bodies Go, what riverbank do all resurrected humans inhabit?

The story behind the answer

In To Your Scattered Bodies Go, resurrected humans inhabit the banks of the Riverworld.

The novel begins with humanity mysteriously revived on an engineered planet whose enormous river winds across its surface. People from different historical periods awaken along its banks, including the explorer Richard Francis Burton, who becomes the central viewpoint character.

The resurrection includes people who died at many different times, allowing historical figures and ordinary individuals to meet in the same landscape. Each person receives a grail-like device that supplies food, drink, and other necessities, although the system does not eliminate conflict or inequality.

Riverworld is not the River Styx from Greek mythology, even though both are associated with death and a river. The series explores identity, history, technology, and the possibility that the resurrection has been arranged by an unknown intelligence. The novel won the 1972 Hugo Award for Best Novel.
