In Patrick Rothfuss’s fantasy novel The Name of the Wind, Kvothe studies at the University.
The University is the leading center of learning in the Four Corners world. Kvothe enters it as a highly gifted but impoverished student and pursues subjects including sympathy, artificing, naming, and medical knowledge.
The institution is closely connected to the Archives, an immense repository of books and records. Kvothe’s attempts to gain access to restricted knowledge there become an important part of his student life, while his rivalry with Ambrose Jakis creates repeated academic and personal difficulties.
The University should not be confused with Imre, the nearby city where many students live and socialize. The novel’s title refers to Kvothe’s legendary search for knowledge and mastery, but the school itself is simply called the University in the text.
