In "Parks and Recreation", which actor plays the perpetually put-upon Jerry (Garry) Gergich?

The story behind the answer

In "Parks and Recreation," Jim O'Heir plays the perpetually put-upon Jerry (Garry) Gergich. O'Heir portrays the Pawnee Parks Department employee whose colleagues constantly mock his clumsiness, speech mistakes, and frequent accidents.

Jerry's character was present from the series premiere in 2009, but the writers developed his personality more fully during the second season. O'Heir had originally auditioned for Ron Swanson, yet the producers liked him enough to cast him immediately and shape a role around him.

The character's name is itself a long-running joke. He is actually Garry Gergich, but a former city employee mistakenly heard “Garry” as “Jerry.” Later seasons cycle through Larry, Terry, and other variations, while the character remains essentially the same good-natured employee. This can cause confusion because reference books and most viewers still call him Jerry.

Despite being the office punchline, Jerry has an unusually happy personal life. He is a talented painter and pianist, has a loving marriage to Gayle, and eventually becomes Pawnee's long-serving mayor. The contrast between his miserable workplace reputation and successful home life is central to the joke.
