In “Parks and Recreation,” the failed winter-sports complex Ben Wyatt built as a teenage mayor was called Ice Town.
Ben was elected mayor of Partridge, Minnesota, at just 18 after an “anti-establishment voter rebellion.” His signature project was Ice Town, an ambitious winter-sports complex that was never completed. The project helped bankrupt the town and contributed to Ben’s impeachment after only two months in office.
The disaster became one of Ben’s defining backstory jokes. A newspaper headline summarized the scandal as “Ice Town Costs Ice Clown His Town Crown,” and characters repeatedly tease him about it. The nickname “Ice Town” is sometimes confused with the broader story of Ben’s failed mayoral administration, but Ice Town is specifically the name of the complex.
Ben’s later career as a budget-conscious state auditor makes the contrast especially funny: the government finance expert once ruined his hometown’s finances through a grand, poorly planned sports project.
