In "Parks and Recreation," April Ludgate and Andy Dwyer adopt a three-legged dog named Champion. The dog joins the couple during the season-four episode "The Comeback Kid," after April and Andy bring him home without first consulting Ben Wyatt.
Champion's name is an Andy-style joke: Andy explains that the dog is called Champion because he is “the dog world champion.” The absurdly confident explanation fits Andy's tendency to turn ordinary events into grand adventures. Champion's missing leg is treated as part of his identity rather than as a source of tragedy.
The adoption also reveals something about April and Andy's relationship. April is usually cynical and emotionally guarded, while Andy is impulsive and enthusiastic. Their decision to bring home a rescue animal combines both traits, and Ben's initial concern about being responsible for the dog creates the episode's domestic comedy.
Champion later appears as a recurring part of the Parks and Recreation world. Viewers sometimes confuse him with Sebastian, the miniature horse beloved by Pawnee residents, or with other animals from the series. Sebastian is not April and Andy's dog; Champion is specifically the three-legged rescue dog they adopt.
