In “Parks and Recreation,” Ron Swanson leads a boys’ wilderness scouting group called the Pawnee Rangers. The organization is introduced as a Boy Scout-like group built around outdoor skills, self-reliance, camping, and traditional survival activities.
Ron’s leadership reflects his character: he wants the boys to learn practical skills and endure uncomfortable conditions rather than receive excessive comforts. In the episode “Pawnee Rangers,” he organizes a camping trip while Leslie Knope creates the Pawnee Goddesses, a parallel group for girls. The rivalry quickly becomes a contest over which group offers the better experience.
The Pawnee Rangers’ austere approach contrasts sharply with the Goddesses’ cabin, candy, puppies, and organized fun. When the boys realize how much more enjoyable the Goddesses’ trip is, they abandon Ron’s group, leaving him alone at the campsite. Leslie later helps him start a more inclusive replacement group called the Swansons.
A common mistake is calling the organization the Pawnee Scouts. “Pawnee Scouts” sounds plausible, but the show’s established name is Pawnee Rangers, which is also the title of the fourth episode of season four.
