In “Parks and Recreation,” the Pawnee Parks Department staff have their offices inside Pawnee City Hall. City Hall is the central workplace for the series’ municipal employees and serves as the main setting for the Pawnee government storylines.
The building houses the Parks and Recreation Department along with other city offices, including the city manager’s office and council chambers. Leslie Knope works there as deputy director under Ron Swanson, while characters such as Tom Haverford, April Ludgate, Donna Meagle, Jerry Gergich, and Ben Wyatt also spend substantial parts of the series in the building.
City Hall is sometimes called Pioneer Hall in earlier references, and the exterior shown on screen is Pasadena City Hall in California, not a real municipal building in Indiana. The fictional town of Pawnee is located in Indiana, but the series was primarily filmed in Southern California.
A common mix-up is confusing Pawnee City Hall with the show’s many other civic locations, including the courthouse, library, and the unsettling fourth floor, which houses offices such as the DMV and probation department.
