In Pakistan, fresh currency notes for Eid gifts are issued by which bank?

The story behind the answer

In Pakistan, fresh currency notes for Eid gifts are issued through the State Bank of Pakistan.

The State Bank of Pakistan, usually abbreviated SBP, is the country’s central bank and manages the currency-issuance system. Before Eid al-Fitr, it has traditionally arranged supplies of crisp, fresh banknotes so people can give money as eidi, the customary Eid gift presented especially to children and younger relatives.

The operational detail is slightly more complicated than the quiz wording suggests. SBP Banking Services Corporation distributes fresh notes to commercial banks, and participating commercial-bank branches then provide them to the public under the central bank’s instructions. Thus, a person may receive the notes at a commercial bank, even though the national issuance programme is organized by the State Bank of Pakistan.

The practice is especially associated with small denominations, which are convenient for eidi. Demand rises sharply before Eid, sometimes creating shortages and encouraging unofficial sellers to charge premiums. That is why SBP has issued rules limiting quantities and warning banks against allowing fresh-note bundles to be diverted into resale markets.
