In the standard Sunni Eid prayer procedure, the imam first recites Al-Fatihah after the opening takbirs.
Al-Fatihah, meaning “The Opening,” is the first chapter of the Quran and consists of seven verses. It is recited in every rak'ah of the formal Muslim prayer, including the two-rak'ah Eid prayer. In Eid salah, the imam then follows it with another Quranic passage, often a surah associated with the Prophet Muhammad’s reported practice.
The Eid prayer has distinctive additional takbirs, whose number and placement vary among Sunni legal schools and local traditions. A commonly described form has seven extra takbirs in the first rak'ah and five in the second, followed by Quranic recitation. These variations do not change Al-Fatihah’s role as the first complete chapter recited.
The answer choices Al-Falaq, Al-Nas, and Al-Ikhlas are all Quran chapters, but they are not the obligatory opening chapter of the prayer. They may be recited as additional passages, depending on the imam and tradition.
