In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, the wolf Sköll swallows the Sun.
Sköll is a wolf who pursues the sun, usually personified as the goddess Sól, across the sky. His pursuit is part of a larger cosmic chase: another wolf, Hati Hróðvitnisson, pursues the Moon. At Ragnarok, these chases reach their catastrophic conclusion when the celestial bodies are captured.
Sköll is distinct from Fenrir, the monstrous wolf who kills Odin during the final battle. The names are easy to confuse because all three wolves belong to the same mythological tradition and are connected with cosmic danger. In some retellings, the Sun’s daughter continues the solar cycle after the original Sun is swallowed.
