In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, the wolf Fenrir kills the god Odin.
Fenrir, also called Fenrisúlfr, is the monstrous wolf born to the god Loki and the giantess Angrboða. The gods grow afraid of his strength and bind him with Gleipnir, a magical fetter made from improbable ingredients such as the sound of a cat’s footsteps and a bird’s spittle.
At Ragnarok, Fenrir breaks free and joins the forces opposing the gods. He rushes across the battlefield and swallows Odin. Odin’s son Vidar then avenges him by killing Fenrir, traditionally by forcing open the wolf’s jaws and driving a sword into him.
Fenrir is often confused with Skoll and Hati, wolves associated with pursuing the sun and moon. Garmr is another underworld-associated hound, but the specific wolf who kills Odin in the Ragnarok narrative is Fenrir.
