In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, which god’s death causes the gods to seek revenge against Fenrir?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, Fenrir kills Odin, prompting the gods’ retaliation through Odin’s son Vidar. The wolf swallows the chief god during the final battle, but Vidar then tears Fenrir apart.

Odin’s death is one of the central turning points of Ragnarok. It fulfills the long-standing threat posed by Fenrir, who had been bound by the gods after they learned of his dangerous future. Vidar is known as the Silent God and wears a powerful shoe, traditionally made from accumulated scraps of leather, which helps him force open the wolf’s jaws.

This episode is sometimes confused with Thor’s death after fighting Jörmungandr. Both Odin and Thor die in the battle, but different monsters kill them, and Vidar’s revenge is specifically directed against Fenrir.
