In Norse mythology’s Ragnarök, Týr is the god who loses a hand while the gods bind Fenrir.
The injury happens before Ragnarök but helps explain the wolf’s hatred of the gods. Fenrir agrees to test the fetter Gleipnir only if one of the gods places a hand in his mouth as a guarantee that the binding is a fair test. Týr accepts because the others refuse.
When Fenrir discovers that Gleipnir cannot be broken, he bites down and severs Týr’s right hand. The gods then keep the wolf bound until the events of Ragnarök. Týr is therefore often shown as courageous and willing to sacrifice himself for the community.
Týr is frequently described as a god of law, oaths, and war. His loss of a hand is separate from the later battle in which he fights the hound Garmr.
