In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, Heimdall fights Loki in a duel that kills both combatants.
Heimdall is the watchman of the gods and is associated with the Bifröst bridge and the Gjallarhorn. At Ragnarok, he sounds the horn to warn the gods before joining the battle. Loki, meanwhile, escapes his bonds and fights on the side of the gods’ enemies.
The surviving sources give only a short account of their final encounter: Heimdall and Loki kill one another. Their mutual destruction is one of the clearest examples of the balanced, catastrophic violence described in the Ragnarok traditions.
This duel is distinct from Loki’s earlier role in Baldr’s death and from Loki’s conflict with Thor in other myths. Heimdall’s death is specifically tied to the final battle.
