In Norse mythology’s Ragnarök, Víðar avenges Odin by killing Fenrir.
Víðar is an Æsir god associated with vengeance and is the son of Odin and the giantess Gríðr. During Ragnarök, Fenrir swallows Odin after breaking free from his magical restraints. Víðar immediately attacks the wolf to avenge his father.
According to the surviving mythic accounts, Víðar places one foot on Fenrir’s lower jaw and forces the wolf’s mouth apart. His special shoe is made from pieces of leather that shoemakers traditionally cut from their footwear, allowing him to withstand Fenrir’s bite. He then kills the wolf.
Víðar is sometimes confused with Váli, another son of Odin associated with vengeance. Váli survives Ragnarök in some traditions, but Víðar is the son who kills Fenrir in the final battle.
