In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, Odin carries the spear Gungnir into the final battle. Gungnir is Odin’s characteristic weapon and one of the best-known enchanted weapons in Norse tradition.
Earlier myths describe Gungnir as a spear made by the dwarfs. It is famed for never missing its mark, making it an emblem of Odin’s authority as well as a practical weapon. At Ragnarok, Odin rides into battle with it before confronting Fenrir.
The encounter ends with Fenrir swallowing Odin, after which Odin’s son Vidar avenges him. This event is separate from Thor’s battle with Jörmungandr and from Freyr’s fight with Surtr, three combats that are sometimes blended together in modern summaries.
Gungnir should not be confused with Mjolnir, Thor’s hammer. Mjolnir is inherited after Ragnarok by Thor’s sons Modi and Magni, while Gungnir remains associated with Odin.
