In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, what is the name of the rooster associated with the giants?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, Fjalar is the rooster associated with the giants.

Völuspá describes more than one rooster crowing as Ragnarok approaches. Gullinkambi crows in Valhalla among the gods, while another rooster crows among the giants. The giant-associated bird is commonly identified as Fjalar in modern reference works, although the poem itself and later prose traditions do not always present the names in exactly the same way.

This creates a frequent mix-up. Fjalar is also the name of a dwarf in the story of the mead of poetry, where he and Galar kill Kvasir. That dwarf is a different character from the rooster linked with Ragnarok.

The rooster’s crow is part of a chain of supernatural warnings. It announces that the final conflict is beginning and that the boundaries between the worlds are breaking down. The detail shows how Ragnarok is signaled not by one event alone, but by several mythic omens.
