In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, what is the name of the field where the gods and giants fight?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, the gods and their enemies fight on the field called Vígríðr. The name appears in the poem Vafþrúðnismál and in Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda, where Vígríðr is described as the great battlefield of the final conflict.

Vígríðr is not the same place as Valhalla, Odin’s hall for slain warriors, or Fólkvangr, Freyja’s field. Those locations are associated with the afterlife and the selection of the dead, whereas Vígríðr is the site of Ragnarok’s decisive combat.

The field is traditionally given an enormous size, often translated as one hundred leagues in every direction. Translation conventions vary, so the exact modern measurement is uncertain. The name itself is therefore the safest answer when identifying Ragnarok’s battlefield, rather than a measurement.
