In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, what happens to the god Njord after the world is renewed?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, Njord returns to the Vanir after the world is renewed. The Prose Edda states that Njord, who had lived among the Æsir, goes back to the Vanir when the catastrophe has passed.

Njord is a fertility and seafaring god associated with wealth, favorable winds, and the sea. He originally belongs to the Vanir, a divine group involved in an earlier war with the Æsir. As part of the peace settlement, Njord and his children Freyr and Freyja live among the Æsir.

The post-Ragnarok fate of Njord is less famous than the survival of Líf and Lífþrasir or the return of Baldr and Höðr. It also illustrates that the two divine families remain distinct even after their long period of cooperation. Njord’s return should not be confused with a death scene.
