In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, what happens to the Earth after Surtr’s fire?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, the Earth rises again from the sea after Surtr’s fire.

The Ragnarok narrative describes a devastating sequence in which the land is consumed by fire and sinks beneath the waves. This is not the final state of existence. After the destruction, the earth emerges again, green and renewed.

The restoration creates a transition from the old mythic order to a new one. Several gods survive or return, and the human pair Líf and Lífþrasir emerge from hiding to repopulate the renewed world. The story therefore combines apocalypse with cosmic renewal.

Modern summaries sometimes describe Ragnarok as pure annihilation, but the medieval sources present a more cyclical ending. The renewed earth is a central reason the myth is better understood as destruction followed by restoration rather than permanent extinction.
