In Norse mythology’s Ragnarok, morning dew sustains Líf and Lífþrasir while they hide in Hoddmímis holt. The two humans survive the destruction that overtakes the world and later become the ancestors of renewed humanity.
The image of dew is brief but important. It provides a simple, natural source of nourishment in a world where ordinary settlements, crops, and animals have been destroyed. Their shelter is commonly translated as Hoddmímis holt, a wooded refuge associated with the giant Hoddmímir.
This detail is sometimes replaced in modern retellings by generic descriptions of stored food or magical nourishment. The surviving mythic account specifically names morning dew. The pair should also not be confused with the gods who survive Ragnarok and inherit parts of the old divine order.
