In Norse mythology, which god returns from the realm of the dead after Ragnarök?

The story behind the answer

In Norse mythology, Baldr returns from the realm of the dead after Ragnarök.

Baldr is one of the most beloved gods in Norse myth. He dies before Ragnarök after Loki engineers a chain of events involving the mistletoe plant and Baldr’s blind brother Höðr. Baldr is sent to Hel, the realm ruled by the goddess of the same name.

The mythic future is more hopeful. After the destruction and renewal of the world, Baldr is said to return from Hel. He is joined by Höðr, the brother whose action caused Baldr’s death, and together they belong to the divine generation of the restored world.

Baldr’s return is sometimes confused with the survival of other gods, such as Víðarr and Váli. Those figures survive the catastrophe, but Baldr’s distinctive role is that he comes back from the realm of the dead after Ragnarök.
