In Nigeria, what popular name is used for Eid al-Fitr?

The story behind the answer

In Nigeria, Eid al-Fitr is popularly known as Small Sallah.

The name reflects the Hausa naming contrast between the two major Islamic festivals. Eid al-Fitr, which ends Ramadan, is commonly called Karamar Sallah or Small Sallah, while Eid al-Adha is called Babbar Sallah or Big Sallah. “Sallah” is a Nigerian everyday term for the Islamic festivals and is related to the Arabic word salat, meaning prayer.

Small Sallah begins on the first day of Shawwal, after the sighting or official determination of the new moon. Nigerian Muslims mark it with the Eid prayer, charitable giving, new clothes, family visits and celebratory meals. A familiar Hausa greeting is “Barka da Sallah,” meaning greetings or blessings for Sallah.

The main mix-up is with Big Sallah: that name belongs to Eid al-Adha, the later festival associated with animal sacrifice, not to the end of Ramadan.
